Provence Rosé

Provence rosé is the benchmark against which all other rosés are measured. Its signature pale colour, bone-dry style, and mineral elegance come from a unique combination of the Mediterranean climate, limestone-rich soils, and centuries of winemaking expertise. The AOP Côtes de Provence appellation — which covers estates including Chateau de Berne and Chateau des Bertrands — enforces strict winemaking practices that prioritise freshness and finesse. Grapes like Grenache, Syrah, and Cinsault grown in the hills around La Garde Freinet and beyond produce a wine of true distinction.

Provence rosé wine was practically made for the table. Its crisp acidity, subtle spice notes, and delicate fruit make it an outstanding companion to Mediterranean-inspired dishes: grilled sea bass, bouillabaisse, tapenade, and fresh goat's cheese are all natural partners. The pale, dry style of wines like Ultimate Provence rosé or Berne Inspiration works beautifully with a classic niçoise salad, seafood platters, and light vegetable tarts. The ideal serving temperature for Provence rosé is around 10°C (50°F) — cool, but not ice cold. For wines like Berne Inspiration, Romance, or Ultimate Provence, the easiest way to reach this temperature is to place the bottle in a bucket filled with ice and water for 15–20 minutes before serving. This method chills the bottle evenly and quickly. Keep a wine cooler on the table to maintain temperature throughout the meal, especially in warmer weather.

The vast majority of Provence rosés — and all the wines in our Côtes de Provence collection — are made in a dry style. This is the regional hallmark: pale pink colour, fresh acidity, and minimal residual sugar. Some producers craft slightly rounder styles with a touch of softness, but true off-dry or sweet Provence rosé is rare and atypical. Most Provence rosés are crafted to be enjoyed young — within one to three years of bottling — to preserve their fresh fruit, pale pink colour, and delicate aromatics. Ageing tends to dull these qualities and shift the colour towards orange or copper as oxidation sets in. A small number of premium wines with greater body and structure — such as certain cuvées from the Ultimate Provence vineyard or Chateau de Berne's top tier — can develop interestingly over a few years, but ageing is the exception in Provence, not the rule.
