      FAQ

How should white wine be served? +
The ideal serving temperature for white wine ranges from 8°C to 12°C (46–54°F), depending on the style. Lighter, crisper whites such as Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio are best served well chilled at the cooler end of this range, while fuller-bodied styles like Chardonnay benefit from being a couple of degrees warmer, which allows their complex aromas to open up. Use proper wine glasses with a narrower rim to concentrate the aromas, and keep the bottle in an ice bucket or wine cooler between pours.
What foods pair well with white wine? +
White wines offer extraordinary versatility at the table. Crisp, zesty styles like Sauvignon Blanc are ideal with oysters, goat's cheese, green salads, and grilled fish. Fuller-bodied whites such as Chardonnay and Viognier hold their own alongside roast chicken, creamy risotto, lobster, and soft ripened cheeses. Our organic white wine selection — including English varieties like Solaris — tends to have bright, clean acidity that works particularly well with delicate seasonal dishes and light vegetarian food pairings.
Do you stock organic white wine? +
Yes — we offer a carefully selected range of organic white wine, produced without synthetic pesticides or chemical fertilisers. Organic viticulture tends to produce wines with greater expression of terroir — the character of the soil and climate — resulting in wines with purity, freshness, and complexity. Our organic white wine selection includes English varieties grown in sustainably managed vineyards, as well as bottles from producers across Europe committed to responsible winemaking practices.
What is the difference between dry and sweet white wine? +
The distinction comes down to residual sugar. Dry white wines — such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Grigio — contain very little residual sugar after fermentation, producing a crisp, clean, refreshing flavour. Sweet white wines, like Riesling Spätlese or Sauternes, retain more natural sugar and have a richer, more honeyed character. At The Wine Caverns, the majority of our white wine collection is dry to off-dry, suited to food pairing and everyday enjoyment.
How long can white wine be stored? +
Most white wines are made to be enjoyed within a few years of release, while their fruit character and freshness are at their peak. Lighter styles such as Sauvignon Blanc are best drunk young — within one to two years. Fuller-bodied whites like Chardonnay and certain English varieties including Solaris can develop beautifully over three to seven years, gaining complexity and depth with time. Store all white wines in a cool, dark place — ideally a wine fridge — and avoid temperature fluctuations.
Which wine glasses should I use for white wine? +
The shape of your wine glasses matters more than you might think. For crisp, aromatic whites like Sauvignon Blanc, choose a glass with a narrower bowl — it concentrates the fresh, floral aromas and keeps the wine cool. For fuller-bodied whites like Chardonnay, a wider-bowled glass allows the more complex aromas to breathe and evolve. In both cases, a long stem is important: it keeps the heat of your hand away from the bowl and preserves the wine's ideal serving temperature for longer.
