      FAQ

What are the most common types of red wine? +
The world's most popular red wine grape varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah/Shiraz, Malbec, and Sangiovese. Each offers a distinct character — from the bold, structured tannins of Cabernet Sauvignon to the silky, cherry-scented finesse of Pinot Noir. Our drinks range at The Wine Caverns spans the full spectrum, from classic French and Italian reds to exciting new-world discoveries and a growing selection of English Red wines produced right here in the United Kingdom.
What food pairs well with red wine? +
Red wines are natural companions to hearty, flavourful dishes. Full bodied red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah shine alongside red meats, grilled steaks, lamb, and game. Medium-bodied styles such as Merlot and Sangiovese complement rich pasta sauces and aged cheeses. Lighter reds — particularly Pinot Noir — are surprisingly versatile: excellent with roasted chicken, mushroom dishes, salmon, and even charcuterie boards. Food pairings depend on the wine's weight and tannin level, so don't hesitate to explore.
What are English red wines like? +
English Red wines are an exciting and fast-growing category. Made predominantly from cold-hardy grape varieties such as Pinot Noir, Rondo, and Regent, they tend to be lighter in body with bright red fruit, earthy character, and refreshing acidity — closer in style to a Burgundian Pinot Noir than to heavier New World reds. The fermentation process in cooler English conditions preserves natural acidity and delicate flavour. At The Wine Caverns, we champion the best English red wines from producers pushing the boundaries of what British vineyards can achieve.
How should red wine be stored? +
Red wine is best stored in a cool, dark environment at a consistent temperature between 12 and 18°C (53–65°F). Keep bottles on their sides to prevent the cork from drying out and allowing air into the bottle. Humidity of around 60 to 70% is ideal. Avoid locations with temperature fluctuations, direct light, or vibration — all of which can compromise the wine over time. A dedicated wine fridge or cellar is ideal for longer-term storage.
What is the difference between dry and sweet red wine? +
The key difference lies in residual sugar — the natural sugar left in the wine after fermentation process. Dry red wines, which make up the vast majority of our collection, have little to no residual sugar, giving them savoury, complex, and often tannic character. Sweet red wines, such as Lambrusco or Port, retain more sugar for a richer, fruitier taste. Most classic food-pairing reds — Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Malbec — are dry styles.
Do you offer free delivery on red wine orders? +
