      FAQ

How are non-alcoholic wines made? +
Non-alcoholic wines begin life as fully fermented wine — made in exactly the same way as any other wine. The alcohol is then removed using one of three main techniques. Vacuum distillation heats the wine under reduced pressure, lowering alcohol's boiling point to around 27°C, which allows it to evaporate while preserving delicate aromas. Reverse osmosis passes the wine through fine membranes that separate alcohol molecules from the rest of the liquid. The spinning cone method uses a series of rotating cones to gently extract aromatic compounds and alcohol separately, then recombines everything except the alcohol — widely considered the gentlest and most flavour-preserving technique. The result is a fermented wine with most of its original character intact — just without the alcohol content.
What styles of non-alcoholic wine are available? +
The zero alcohol selection at The Wine Caverns covers all the main wine styles. You can find non-alcoholic sparkling wine — perfect for toasting at celebrations without the alcohol — as well as alcohol-free white wine, red wine, and rosé. Alcohol-free white wines work particularly well with lighter styles, including Sauvignon Blanc-inspired profiles with crisp acidity and fresh fruit. Non-alcoholic red wines tend toward softer, fruit-forward expressions. Rosé options bring the elegance of provençal style without the alcohol content. Whatever your occasion, there is a zero alcohol selection to suit.
Do non-alcoholic wines taste like regular wine? +
The best modern alcohol-free wines come impressively close to their alcoholic counterparts. Thanks to advanced winemaking techniques — particularly the spinning cone method — the most important aromatic compounds and flavour profiles are preserved during alcohol removal. You can expect genuine wine character: crisp acidity, expressive fruit, and balanced structure. The one difference is mouthfeel: alcohol naturally adds body and weight, so alcohol-free wines can feel slightly lighter on the palate. That said, quality has improved dramatically in recent years, and many drinkers are surprised by how authentic and satisfying a good non-alcoholic wine can be.
Are non-alcoholic wines suitable for special occasions and dinner parties? +
Absolutely — and this is where non-alcoholic wines have made their greatest strides. Non-alcoholic sparkling wine is a natural choice for toasting at celebrations, dinner parties, and events where some guests prefer not to drink alcohol. Alcohol-free white wine pairs beautifully alongside seafood, light pasta, and salads — all the same food pairings you'd expect from its alcoholic equivalent. Many people choose our zero alcohol selection for Dry January, pregnancy, designated driving, religious observance, or simply as part of a more mindful approach to drinking. These are wines designed to be shared and enjoyed — not compromises.
Are non-alcoholic wines lower in calories? +
Yes — significantly so. A standard 150ml glass of wine contains around 120 calories, with most of those coming from the alcohol itself. A comparable glass of non-alcoholic wine typically contains just 30 to 50 calories — a reduction of 60% to 75% depending on the brand and style. Removing alcohol also reduces alcohol-related side effects such as dehydration. Some non-alcoholic wines add residual sugar to compensate for the body and structure that alcohol provides, so it's worth checking the nutritional label if you're monitoring your sugar intake. Overall, alcohol-free wines are a meaningfully lighter option.
How should non-alcoholic wine be stored? +
Storage rules for non-alcoholic wine are very similar to those for regular wine. Keep bottles in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and temperature fluctuations. Bottles sealed with a cork should be stored horizontally to keep the cork moist — just as with standard wine. Bottles with a screw cap or other closure can be stored upright without issue. Once opened, non-alcoholic wine should be resealed and refrigerated; it will typically keep for three to five days — slightly longer than some alcoholic wines, as the absence of alcohol changes the oxidation dynamic.
